Self care: your super weapon for staying productive and conquering the daily grind

Ever feel like you’re caught in the endless loop of work, work, and more work? The secret sauce to breaking free might be closer than you think. It’s called self-care, and it’s not just about scented candles and bubble baths. Let’s dive into the magical world where self-care meets productivity and learn how taking care of ourselves will take care of the work in no-time.

1. Power naps: A stealthy reboot

Forget the notion that naps are reserved for lazy Sundays. Sneak in a power nap during your day. They’ve been shown to boost alertness and performance – but only if they’re the right length. Sleep for too long and you’ll be entering the ‘groggier when you wake up than when you went to sleep’ territory. So, find a cosy spot, set an alarm, and drift off.

2. Podcasts: Learn while you lounge

Swap the usual Netflix binge for a podcast marathon. Whether it’s about business and entrepreneurship or a history deep-dive, turn mundane tasks into opportunities for learning. Pop those earbuds in while doing chores or during your commute – it’s like a knowledge infusion for your brain. Currently I’m listening to You’re Dead to Me and Deep Dive with Ali Abdaal, though sometimes I’ll treat myself to a gaming podcast too.

If you want to be really productive, listen to your podcasts on 2X speed.

3. Art breaks: Sketch your stress away

You’ve seen all of the colouring books – clearly, doodling isn’t just for kids. Take a creative break by sketching or doodling. It’s a fantastic stress-buster and a mind-refreshing activity. Not an artist? No problem! The goal here is to let your mind wander and recharge through a splash of artistic expression.

4. Move that body: Exercise for the mind

Exercise isn’t just for fitness fanatics; it’s for anyone craving a productivity boost. Whether it’s a jog, a Just Dance session, or a Youtube yoga sesh, get that body moving. Exercise releases endorphins, those magical mood-boosting hormones. And let’s face it, a happy, energised you is a productivity dynamo. I’ve been really into bouldering lately and, whenever I go after work, I feel so much more productive the following day. Find something that you enjoy and stick to it.

5. Nature strolls: Walk your worries away

Step into the great outdoors, even if it’s just your local park. A brisk walk amidst nature is a fantastic way to clear your mind. Breathe in the fresh air, soak up the vitamin D, and let nature work its magic on your stress levels. If you can, I’d recommend getting away and out of the city (if you’re in one) and going on a hike in the hills. I do this whenever I can; the views never get dull.

6. Music: Curate your productivity playlist

Craft a playlist that suits your work vibe. Whether it’s instrumental beats, classical tunes, or your favourite guilty pleasure songs, music can be a powerful motivator. Use it to set the mood for different tasks and keep your energy levels high. Equally, tune in to Spotify’s pre-made playlists. I usually stick to my Daily Mixes and Release Radar if I fancy singing along, or something like the Lord of the Rings soundtrack if I need total focus.

7. Digital Detox: Unplug for Mental Rejuvenation

Give your eyes and brain a break from the digital deluge, especially right before bed. Designate specific periods in your day for a digital detox. Turn off notifications, resist the urge to check emails, and enjoy a screen-free intermission. Your mind will thank you.

8. DIY Desk Spa: Relaxation at Your Fingertips

Transform your workspace into a mini-spa. Keep essential oils, a stress ball, or a small plant nearby. Take mini-breaks to engage in quick desk spa sessions. You might prefer having that desk spa elsewhere to keep your setups separated. Personally, I go through periods of wanting a minimal versus maximal desk, so you might enjoy playing around, experimenting, and seeing what works best for you.
